Disposals
Always unplug the unit and read the owner’s manual before trying any repair.
The first think that you should remember is the garbage disposal is not a food processor. Always put excess food from plates or leftover foods from the refrigerator into the garbage.
Jammed disposal: This happen when debris get caught between the cutters and the unit causing the cutters to stop spinning, usually making a humming noise.
Unplug the unit. Try to remove any debris, install the disposal wrench into the slot in the bottom of the disposal and try turning the wrench. If the unit spins freely, plug the unit in and run cold water while turning the switch back on. Sometimes this step needs to be repeated. Always unplug the unit and read the owners manual before trying to remove debris or using the disposal wrench.
No Power: The disposal has a reset switch usually located at the bottom of the unit. Sometimes the unit gets jammed which causes the reset button to trip. This is a safety mechanism that can be reset. Always unplug the unit and read the owners manual before trying to reset the disposal.
Never pour grease or oils down the garbage disposal, they can solidify in the sewer line causing blockages.
Dishwasher: A 7/8” black hose may connect from the disposal to a air gap on your sink or countertop. If this is the case, this hose should have grade from the air gap side to the side outlet of the disposal. If there are bellies or kinks there could be a problem with the dishwasher draining. The most noticeable sign is when the dishwasher drains water comes out the airgap instead of going into the disposal. This can damage the pump in the dishwasher.
